Carrie Elizabeth Wachter, lifelong resident of
Glasgow, passed away at the
Golden Living Center Tuesday evening, September 20, 2011. Carrie
was the
daughter of the late Casper J. and Olga (Nuhn) Wachter and was
born on May 8, 1910, in
Glasgow, Missouri. She received her education in the
Glasgow public school system and graduated from
Glasgow High School in 1928. After high school,
Carrie worked as a telephone operator until she was hired on
May1, 1943, as librarian of the Lewis Library. She
faithfully worked as the librarian for 48 years before retiring
in 1991. The Children’s Reading Room is named in her
honor.Carrie Wachter was a devoted member of the Evangelical
United BrethrenChurch and the United Methodist Church in
Glasgow. She and her sister, Dorothy, taught Sunday School for
many years and served the church and other organizations in
countless ways.
Carrie was preceded in death by her sister, Dorothy Wachter;
her parents, Casper and Olga (Nuhn) Wachter; her brother, Robert
Wachter and her sister, Mary Wachter
Ireland from her father’s first marriage to Fannie H.
Maddox; and her niece, Martha (Ireland) Kinghorn. She is
survived by her nephew, James Wachter, and the children of her
niece, Martha (Ireland) Kinghorn. Also surviving are Dorothy’s
first cousin, Madge (Gebhardt) Allen and her descendants and the
descendants of her other first cousin, John Nuhn (recently
deceased).
Carrie spent the last years of her life at the Golden Living
Center in Glasgow
where she enjoyed visiting with people, playing dominoes, and
attending church
services. She was lovingly cared for by the Center’s staff, and
her family is
very appreciative of their kindness and consideration.
Carrie Wachter most enjoyed reaching the grand age of 100 and
her centennial
birthday celebration in 2010 and all the festivities leading up
to it were some
of her happiest days in recent years.
Carrie and her sister Dorothy were unique and talented
individuals, who gave so much to the Glasgow community
throughout their lives. They were very special ladies, truly one
of a kind, and will be greatly missed.
Funeral services will be
3:30 PM, Friday, September 23, 2011 at the E.U.B.
Chapel with Revs. James and Jane Crooks officiating. Burial
will be in
Washington Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Lewis Library
or the EUB Chapel in care of Friemonth-Freese Funeral Service,
