Jim Clatworthy
1937 - 2011
Long time Fayette businessman and civic leader James C.
"Spider" Clatworthy, 73, died Friday, February 11 at Golden
Living Center.
The son of Urlyss Atkinson and Jane B. Hammer Clatworthy, Mr.
Clatworthy was born at Lee Hospital in Fayette on April 14,
1937. He grew up in Fayette and attended Fayette Public Schools,
graduating with the class of 1955 and continued his education at
Missouri State University in Springfield and Central Methodist
University in Fayette.
He married Peggy Davis on June 15, 1962, at the Fayette First
Baptist Church.
Mr. Clatworthy joined his father in the family business,
Clatworthy’s Ready to Wear in the early 1960's.. A Fayette
institution on the north side of the square for decades, the
store flourished under Jim’s management until 2009. At his
retirement, the store had been continuous operation for 74
years, making it one of Fayette’s oldest businesses.
Always a willing worker in the community, Mr. Clatworthy was
a member of the Fayette Chamber of Commerce and the C.M.U.
Alumni Board. He was the Howard County representative for the
American Red Cross where he taught countless young people about
swimming and water safety during 30 years as swim instructor and
swim team coach. He was a member of the Missouri National Guard.
An active member of the First Christian Church, he served as
Deacon and held other church offices.
Mr. Clatworthy is survived by his wife of the home, two
daughters; Pamela (Jeff) Upton of Lee’s Summit and Cindy (Rob)
Schluckebier of New Franklin, and one son, Rob Clatworthy of
Columbia. Also surviving are five grandchildren; Jay (Sarah)
Clatworthy, Madison Upton,
Bryce Upton, Hannah Noel, and Sophie Schluckebier, and two
great-grandchildren; Robbie and Jace Clatworthy. Brother Tom
Clatworthy of Harrisonville also survives.
A memorial service for James Clatworthy will be at 3 pm,
Sunday February 13 at Fayette First Christian Church with Rev
Paula Ritchie officiating. Friends may call from 1 to 3 pm at
the church..
