Mary Cecelia Hammons

1915 – 2011

 

 

Lifetime Howard County resident, Mary Cecelia Hammons passed away at Golden Living Center in Glasgow , Wednesday, September 14, 2011.  She was 96 years of age.

 

Mary was born to Henry and Anna (Moorman) Thies Jr. in Howard County, MO July 15, 1915.  She attended St. Mary’s grade school for eight years and St. Mary’s High School for two years, graduating in 1931.  Mary married Orville Lee Hammons in 1938 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Glasgow .  He preceded her in death March 27, 1999.

 

She is survived by one son, Leon (Trish) Hammons of Armstrong, four grandchildren, Lisa (Steve) Murrell of Glasgow, Terri (Ross) Crutcher of Blue Springs, Paul Hammons of Madison, and Sara (Pat) Simpson of Glasgow.  Mary is also survived by nine great-grandchildren, Caitlin, Kylee, Logan , Kellen, Gretta, Brooke, Jacob, Zach, and Hannah.

Besides her parents and husband, Mary was preceded in death by five brothers, Al, Bernard, John, Joe, and Vince, and one sister, Rose Deane.

 

Mary, a devout Catholic, truly loved her faith and her family.  She was always there to help anyone who needed her.  She was a member and president of the Cozy Corner Extension Club for a number of years.  Mary was also an avid quilter, making beautiful quilts for the church as well as each family member.

 

Services for Mrs. Hammons are 10am Saturday, September 17, 2011 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Fr. Richard Frank officiating.  Visitation will be Friday, September 16 from 6-8pm at Friemonth-Freese Funeral Chapel in Glasgow with a Rosary at 7pm.  Burial will follow the service at Washington Cemetery .

 

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to St. Mary’s Home and School or the Capital Fund, in care of Friemonth-Freese Funeral Service, 112 Market St. , Glasgow , MO 65254 .
