Robert Montgomery
1931 - 2011
Fayette resident, Robert Montgomery passed away at his home
in Fayette, August 7, 2011. He was 79 years of age.
Robert Eugene Montgomery was born December 14, 1931 in
Cabool, MO to Henry and Mary (Lunyou) Montgomery. He enlisted in
the U.S. Army at the age of 17 and earned the Bronze Star and
Purple Heart medals for his bravery and meritorious service
during the Korean War. Following his discharge, Robert married
Lorann C. Jenkins at St. Peter’s Church in Jefferson City,
January 17, 1951. She preceded him in death on April 5, 2008.
Robert then re-enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and became a
Technical Sergeant for operating aviation radar. He retired from
the Air Force in 1971. From 1974-1992, Robert worked as the
Director of Building and Grounds at Central Methodist College in
Fayette. After retirement, Robert kept busy driving the Oats bus
for several years.
Robert was a family man who loved fishing, hunting, playing
cards and bowling. He also enjoyed watching Dallas Cowboys
football and St. Louis Cardinals baseball. He was a devout
member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Fayette and was a 3rd
degree, Knights of Columbus member.
He is survived by two sons, Michael Montgomery of Fayette and
Mitchell Montgomery of Lee’s Summit; two grandchildren, Clint (Bri)
Iadanza and Laura (Chris) Eidson, one great-granddaughter,
Isebella Eidson, two sisters-in-law, Jean Montgomery of Glasgow
and Sue (Bud) Bruckner of Blue Springs, and several nieces and
nephews. Besides his wife and parents, Robert was preceded in
death by five brothers, Lyman, Elvie, Clyde, Hershel and
Gaylord; one sister, Opal, and daughter-in-law Cynthia.
Services for Mr. Montgomery are 11am Thursday, August 11,
2011 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Fayette with Fr. Robert
Duesdeiker officiating. Visitation is 6-8pm with a Prayer
Service at 7:45pm, Wednesday, August 10 at Friemonth-Freese
Funeral Chapel in Fayette. Burial will follow the service at
Walnut Ridge Cemetery.
